To travel Ipoh-Johor Bahru by car is a six-hour journey and with this new domestic route, it connects the two cities with about an hour flight.
Chief executive officer of AirAsia Malaysia dropped the bombshell over a tweet yesterday (Jul 12). Riad Asmat wrote, “Pleased to announce that #AirAsia will be flying to and from #Ipoh with Johor Bahru as the first destination. More details coming next week. So stay tuned!”

According to The Star, Riad said the low-cost airline is excited to open for boarding in Ipoh and its first connection to the city is Johor Bahru.
“We can’t wait to welcome our first flight from Johor into Sultan Azlan Shah Airport at Ipoh.
“We have more plans in the pipeline for this route and will share the details soon,” said Riad in a statement.
The CEO added that AirAsia Malaysia is committed to stimulating the blooming of domestic tourism nationwide. The move is one step in securing a consistent tourism for Perak.
AirAsia’s presence in Perak’s capital city marks the low-cost airline 16th domestic route in the country. Currently, the company with the slogan “Now Everyone Fly” flies to nine states in Malaysia, additionally the small island in Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan.
