The Health Ministry has opened a can of worms lately and thanks to them it evaded the same fate happening to us.
This morning, The Star reported that the ministry had found six brands of sardine and mackerel contained with roundworms. This follows suit a similar discovery two months ago whereby two China brands, TL Tan Lung and TLC, were ordered to be recalled by the ministry for the same reason.
“The Health Ministry through the food safety and quality division has been monitoring imported canned fish (sardine and mackerel) in the local market,” Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement published yesterday (Jun 28).
Here are the brands, including the two mentioned earlier, that are found to have parasitic worms within the canned fish:
- Sea Fresh
- HS Brand
- King Cup
- TC Boy
- TL Tan Lung
The ministry elaborated that the worms are from the genus Anisakis spp; if consumed, it would cause anisakiasis disease whereby the nematode (worm) would attack the gastrointestinal system such as the stomach and intestines of humans. Notable symptoms and gastrointestinal problems of the disease are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and among others. The disease is also common when humans consume raw or medium cooked seafood which is infected with the Anisakis spp parasite.
