“You (Mohamad Sabu) are the defence minister. Talk about the country’s defence policies, not about fish curry. This is not defence minister material. This is a joker.”
Those are the words coming out from ousted Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Razak when he spoke at a ceramah in Sungai Kandis on Monday (Jul 30). The constituency in Shah Alam is slated to have a by-election coming Saturday (Aug 4) which expects over 50,000 voters to turn up.
FMT reported Najib slamming the current Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, or better known as Mat Sabu, for his comic relief outlook in recent media appearances and reprimanded Pakatan Harapan for choosing such a “joker” to hold a role that protects the safety of the country.
“Our defence minister is a cartoon. He wears the beret like a cartoon. He gets into the warship and talks about fish curry,” Najib said on a stage.
Citing to his 14 years serving as the Defence Minister, Najib said he knew about the “standard” an individual needs to hold the position. He even flaunted his experience speaking to the “Defence Secretary of the United States of America,” suggesting that Mat Sabu couldn’t put up as he did.
“I cannot guarantee it if Mat Sabu is facing the defence secretary of the US, because he will be talking about fish. The defence secretary will be in a daze. He would ask, ‘What standards do we have in Malaysia?’ Strange, this type of person can become a minister,” Najib said.
According to the news portal, Mat Sabu was a former PAS politician who graduated in food sciences and has a knack and passion for cooking. The Amanah president is known for his oratory skills and ability to attract large crowds to ceramahs.
He was among the first three ministers announced by Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad to join the Cabinet after the coalition ousted the Barisan Nasional from the federal power. However, he admitted that he no longer had the time to cook and fish since assuming the post.
‘Look in the mirror before berating someone’
After Najib’s berating speech had gotten out, former UMNO division leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan had chastised the former premier and asked him to look in the mirror before berating someone.
“Mohamad Sabu has shown that he is capable of leading the Defence Ministry with integrity … this is the most important quality for a leader,” Khairuddin said in a statement yesterday (Jul 31).
“What is the use of having leaders who syok sendiri (pat themselves on the back) and is good at plundering the government’s and people’s monies?”
