Growing up, our Asian parents have taught us to respect our books − to never sit on them, walk over them, needless to say, step on them. However, this group of teens did not just disrespect any book, they disrespected a holy book!
According to Utusan Online, the incident happened on a roadside at Kusial Lama, Tanah Merah, Kelantan, at about 2.30pm, July 13.
A teen in a blue hijab was seen stepping on a green-covered Quran as one of her friends filmed it. The three minutes and 13 seconds video eventually made its way to social media and went viral.
The group was heard laughing during the act and none of the other three female teens tried to stop her.
The four suspects, aged between 17 and 18, were arrested in the vicinity of Kusial, Tanah Merah on Friday (Jul 19). They would be remanded for three days.
Kelantan deputy police chief Azmi Abu Kassim said the arrest was made after one of the teens’ sister filed a police report, Malaysiakini reported.
Asked if the teen in blue hijab was forced to swear aloud, Azmi said the police is still probing.
It is currently investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which is in relation to defiling a place of worship or any sacred object with intent to insult a religion. If convicted, the offender could face imprisonment for up to two years, a fine or both.
In the video, the teen was heard saying “sumpah dia buat aku” as she stepped on the holy book.
Her friends seemed to have insisted her to swear that if she had sex with a man.
“Betul kau bersetubuh? Cakaplah jujur. Sumpah kau bersetubuh?”
“Is it true that you had sex. Be honest. Swear that you had sex,” a friend was heard saying to her.
It is reported that the girl later denied that she had sexual intercourse with anyone and said she was forced to swear in fear of her own safety.
Let’s hope the police can get to the bottom of this.
