Kedah Man Lost Control of Bike, Rode into Oncoming Traffic and Crushed by Truck

Driving against traffic is dangerous. It can become deadly when it is committed on a double dividing line road, inside a tunnel. Tragically, it happened to a motorcyclist in Penang and he was run over by an oncoming truck.

According to China Press, the incident happened on Wednesday (Feb 27) and a closed-circuit television had captured the moment which saw a flatbed truck running over the motorcyclist who rode into its direction.

The seven-second footage of the incident is widely circulated on social media. In it, we could see the motorcyclist failed to follow his lane and encroach into the oncoming traffic at high speed. Unable to stop in time, the flatbed truck crashed into the bike and the motorcyclist body was run over by the truck’s huge wheel.

The freak accident happened at 6.42 am and the victim was identified as 20-year-old Mohd Akif Aiman Abdul Malek from Kedah. Akif died due to severe head and body injuries.

Sinar Harian reported Northeast District police chief Che Zaimani as saying that the deceased was riding a Yamaha Y15 motorbike from Green Lane to Glugor. However, he failed to control his bike which led him to the opposite lane of the underpass.

The truck, on the other hand, was driving from Lumut, Perak to Air Itam, Penang, transporting some building materials. It happened so fast; when the biker was hit at the frontal side of the truck, then ran under by the wheel against the tar surface, his body was smeared on the road.

Other than the 20-year-old’s death, the truck was also horribly damaged by the victim’s bike.

At the entrance of the underpass, there was a “No Enter” sign, prohibiting motorcyclist to enter the Udini road tunnel in the opposite direction.

The police arrived at the accident scene and brought the body to the Penang General Hospital for a post-mortem. Police managed to control the traffic by setting up roadblocks in the morning rush-hours. The traffic was smooth again after the police were done with the investigation.

Che Zamaini said the flatbed’s driver was a 48-year-old man and was not injured. The police are now investigating the case under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
