Malaysian King Gives Up Throne, Ready To Go Back To His Kelantan State

After tremendous rumours claiming that the King could be giving up his throne, it looks like the rumours ring true this time.

According to reports that just came in (Jan 6), Sultan Muhammad V has stepped down as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Malaysiakini reported Pengelola Bijaya Diraja (Comptroller of the Royal Household) Wan Ahmad Dahlan Ab Aziz as saying that the King had informed other Rulers about his resignation.

“The Palace would like to inform that the Seri Paduka Baginda Tuanku has resigned as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong effective Jan 6 in accordance to Article 32(3) of the Federal Constitution,” said Wan Ahmad in a statement on Sunday (Jan 6).

The King thanked the other Malay Rulers for choosing him to lead the country which started on Dec 13, 2016. Every Ruler can serve a maximum of five years as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on a rotation basis. Sultan Muhammad V hailing from Kelantan state stepped down two years earlier than his righteous royal stint.

Article 32(3) states that: “The Yang di-Pertuan Agong shall be elected by the Conference of Rulers for a term of five years, but may at any time resign his office by writing under his hand addressed to the Conference of Rulers or be removed from office by the Conference of Rulers, and shall cease to hold office on ceasing to be a ruler”.

Wan Ahmad added that the King appreciates the prime minister and government in running the country alongside with him.

“As the highest authority of the Armed Forces, his majesty is also proud of their sacrifices and loyalty to him and the country.

“To Malaysians, Seri Paduka Baginda Tuanku calls on them to remain as one in maintaining unity, tolerance to uphold their duty to the country so that a sovereign Malaysia will continue to be peaceful and harmonious,” he said.

The spokesman said the King will be returning to his people in Kelantan to help uplift the state further, The Star reported.

The press release did not divulge on Sultan Muhammad V’s alleged marriage with Russian beauty queen Oksana Voevodina where international media said the wedding took place in Moscow on November 22.

Pictures of the wedding went viral on social media ever since and Malaysians saw the 49-year-old King sitting beside the 25-year-old beauty surrounded by bridesmaids and flowers.

This is the first time an Agong has abdicated before his tenure, Reuters reported.
