Conventional wisdom has always suggested that drinking alcohol and eating durian at the same time would result in death, much like eating a Mantos while drinking a soda. Psst, both are not true which the latter is confirmed by Coca-Cola.
We all know it is an urban myth but sadly, it came true to a man in Thailand after consuming the “lethal” combination in one seating.
China Press reported a 48-year-old man was found dead at a bus stop on Sukhumvit Road, Pattaya at 6.30am last Wednesday (Aug 14).
His body was seated and naked when found by his friend, identified as Peng.
Peng, 58, said the deceased and him would go to collect used goods every day. The day before, the deceased said he wanted to buy durian and liquor so he could enjoy them both while waiting for the bus.
Peng warned him about eating the two could be fatal but the deceased dismissed it and said, “I am a local, I am not afraid.”
When Peng went to the bus stop the next day, he found his friend seated lifelessly with a bottle of white wine and a box of durian beside him.
It is previously reported that durian and alcohol are not a lethal mix as claimed by many.
According to Singapore’s Health Xchange by SingHealth, there is no scientific evidence linking alcohol and durian simultaneous consumption to death.
“It is more likely to cause bloating, indigestion and discomfort as your liver has to work extra hard to metabolise both fats and sugars in the durians and the alcohol, especially if you have consumed both in excessive amounts,” it said, backed by dietetics and food services experts from Changi General Hospital.
Our condolences go out to the uncle who only wanted to experience a palate paradise.
