MPK: Emporium Makan Will Open As Long As It Can Until LRT 3 Construction Begins

Good news, residents of Klang. The food court with 50 years of history, Emporium Makan, will not wind down this June 30 as previously announced.

According to a report by Sin Chew on June 21, Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Datuk Mohamad Yasid announced that the city council will fulfil traders’ wish to “stay open until it cannot stay open.”

Yasid confirmed that the procedure for requisitioning the land of Emporium Makan Klang is still in negotiation. Only after the city council has handed over the land rights to LRT3, traders would then be asked to move out of the food court.

Traders’ lease on their hawker stalls were previously slated to expire on June 30 but Yasid said it is now extended on “monthly basis” until LRT3 officially requisitions the land and issues a gazettement notice.

“We will not close the Emporium Makan right away, but the extension can only be done on a “monthly” basis, rather than a few months, a half year or a year,” said Yasid when he was attending the city council’s Hari Raya open house ceremony on Friday.

Opened in mid-1969, Emporium Makan has served the people for the past 50 years. According to The Star, the rent started out at RM45 for a stall lot in 1970 and now, it is RM200 to RM250, depending on the prominence of the stall location.
