According to a report last year, there were 22,134 child sexual abuse cases from 2010 to 2017 and among them, more than 13,000 cases were child rape − which is a staggering 59.7%!
There may have been many more rape cases which have gone unreported. On Saturday (Jul 28), a serial child rapist had been arrested in Penang after avoiding three cases in the past, NST reported.
The police arrested the man at a shopping mall in Prai as he was ready to rape his fourth victim. Central Seberang Perai district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said that they had received tip-off of the man’s activities and with the help of the public, they were able to stop the man moments before he assault yet another girl at the same mall on Saturday.
Nik Ros Azhan said that the man posed as a woman on WeChat to approach underage girls. With some smooth talking, the man would convince the young girls to send “her” pictures of their breasts so he could “assess” the treatment needed.
“Once he received the pictures, he would then threaten to post them online and reveal their identities. He would then blackmail his victims into meeting him at a shopping mall in Prai.
“Upon meeting, he would bring his victim to a vacant shop lot on the mall’s fourth floor where he would molest and rape them,” said the police chief.
Shockingly, despite having assaulted three girls since December last year, only one girl had lodged a police report against the 37-year-old rapist.
“The victim was a 13-year-old girl, who lodged a report in December 2017 after being raped by the man using the same modus operandi,” he said.
Donned in a white Puma t-shirt, the man is now in police custody.
We thank the police for the arrest before he could pounce on the next victim. We hope the number of child rape case would go down in the coming years, too!
