If you’ve been missing your old Tamagotchi, you’ll be happy to know that it’s finally making the jump from tiny handheld device to your smartphone.
Bandai Namco recently announced that they’re bringing their mega-popular cyber-pet from 20 years ago to Android and iOS, with a new game called My Tamagotchi Forever. Aside from finally officially being on your smartphone, your virtual pet will still need to be taken care of daily, which means you have to keep it clean, entertained and well fed so it will grow. That pretty much means playing with it and shovelling its poop. I’m sure you all remember that.
Of course, the creatures will be a lot livelier than their original counterparts but the game still remains the same; taking care of a critter from a small egg and care for it as it evolves into different forms till it hits adulthood. On top of that, you can explore Tamatown together, play minigames, unlock food, costumes and befriend other Tamagotchi characters as you go along. For the more competitive among you, you can compare your progress with other players.
If you’re not content with your Tamagotchi just residing on your mobile device, the app also supports Augmented Reality functions using ARKit for Apple and ARCore for Google.
However, it does remain to be seen if the new generation will pick up our little friends as enthusiastically as we did back in the 90s but for us, it would be a nice trip down nostalgia lane, as long as they got rid of the annoying beeping.
